Sylvania Police Upgrades

Gov. Bob Riley has awarded $24,997 to enhance public safety for residents in Sylvania. The grant will enable the Sylvania Police Department to buy computers and radio equipment for patrol cars.

“Every time our police officers put on the badge, they may be called upon to risk their lives to protect us,” Riley said. “It is essential that we provide them with the equipment needed to perform their duties.”

The computers will provide police officers with immediate access to up-to-date law enforcement data, including criminal background checks, automobile license plate data and other pertinent information. Officers also can complete reports and electronically submit that information to headquarters using the equipment.

Improved radio equipment will enable Sylvania police officers to maintain communications with each other and with headquarters in areas where radio signals previously were blocked by mountainous terrain.

The grant had been awarded from funds made available to the state from the U.S. Department of Justice.
